Tongbei Martial Arts (通备武艺)

Traditional Chinese Martial Arts in our Wushu School

Tongbei Martial Arts (通备武艺) is a comprehensive traditional system of Chinese martial arts. Unlike individual fighting styles, it is a holistic martial arts education that combines several classic fist styles as well as traditional weapon forms. The term Tongbei (通备) literally means "completely connected" or "comprehensively prepared." This principle represents the connection of body structure, power transmission, technique, strategy, and mental attitude.

The four traditional fist styles

Tongbei Martial Arts combines four classic fist styles that complement each other in technique, dynamics, and application, together forming a complete training system. Pigua Quan (劈挂拳) Pigua Quan is known for large, wide, and whip-like arm movements. The style trains relaxed power, fluid transitions, and the effective use of the entire body. It forms an important foundation for power transmission and movement quality. Fanzi Quan (翻子拳) Fanzi Quan is characterized by fast changes of direction, continuous striking techniques, and high mobility. This style trains responsiveness, coordination, and tactical understanding. Baji Quan (八极拳) Baji Quan is a powerful close-combat style with explosive energy. Deep stances, short distances, and penetrating power are characteristic. Baji Quan is often valued for its direct and effective application. Chuojiao (戳脚) Chuojiao emphasizes versatile and dynamic kicking techniques. Sense of distance, timing, and footwork are the focus of this style.

Traditional weapons in Tongbei Martial Arts

Training with traditional Chinese weapons is a central component of Tongbei Martial Arts. The weapon forms are closely linked to the fist styles and deepen the understanding of body mechanics, power transmission, distance, and timing.

Types of weapons in training

  • Pigua Dao (劈挂刀) – Saber forms with large, fluid movements based on the principles of Pigua Quan
  • Pigua Jian (劈挂剑) – Sword forms with precise guidance, flexibility, and clear body structure
  • Bian Gan (鞭杆) – Flexible staff weapon for training full-body strength, coordination, and controlled explosiveness
  • Shuang Gou (双钩) – Double hook swords with complex techniques and high coordination requirements
  • Shengbiao (绳镖) – Rope dart, a flexible weapon for developing timing, sense of distance, and full-body control
  • Fengmo Gun (疯魔棍) – Long staff forms with dynamic, powerful, and rhythmic movements

Weapon training complements the fist styles into a complete traditional martial arts education and promotes technique, concentration, agility, and strategic thinking.
